I’d like to be
I’d like to be a scientist that’s ever born,The first astronaut to tour the whole galaxy –
I’d like to rule the world like Napoleon,
With strength, benevolence and cunning diplomacies.
I’d like to discover the lost Atlantis,
Or the capital of Emperor Magnon
I’d like to discover the secret formula,
Mystics n charms of the Chinese and Egyptians.
How many lives a man has to live,
I’d like to find by calculations,
What amount of sacrifice does it need,
To be free of worldly illusions?
I’d like to be the skylark flying high,
With my songs, I’d wake the poor and the rich.
I’d like to be the cool summer wind,
Soothing wrought minds and body with blessed deep sleep.
I’d like to live a life full of sunshine,
Showered with love, peace and joy.
I’d like to be surrounded by children,
Their games and laughter bringing eternal joy..!
I’d like to own a wardrobe from Paris,
Each dress matched with ballerina or stilletoes;
Diamonds should sparkle everywhere,
Reflecting lights from ballroom and disco floors.
I’d like to be the belle of this country,
Stealing away every bachelor’s heart,
I’d like to dance like Travolta or Pavlova,
My melodies surpassing Shankar’s sitar.
With my discoveries and achievements,
I’d like to take the world in a whirl –
But when you come back to the present,
Alas, I’m just a common girl..! ©Nandini Mitra May 15, 1982
